About the Project:

Together with their inclusive design partner, Kinneir Dufort (KD), the company is committed to conducting in-depth research and feasibility studies to address the challenges of implementing Al-incorporated Voice-User-Interface (VUI) technology for EV charging among individuals with disabilities. By focusing on accessibility challenges and exploring the impact of new technology on individuals with disabilities, the project seeks to deliver a validated user feedback study as an evaluative document containing recommendations for iterations.

The primary focus of this collaborative project is to identify and define the target users, their possible challenges, and inclusive & exclusionary technologies in the context of EV charging. Through rigorous exploration, the project team aims to select concepts to be refined and developed into low-fidelity prototypes aimed at providing evaluative feedback from the target users.

At this early stage, the collaborative team's objective is to understand the complexities and requirements involved in designing an inclusive Voice-User-Interface (VUl) model. By conducting thorough research and collaborating with experts and users, the project team intends to gain valuable insights into these aspects to inform future decision-making and development efforts.

Driving Innovation with Kinneir Dufort:

Collaborating with the design partner, KD, BeWorks leverages over 45 years of design expertise. KD plays a crucial role in shaping impactful and inclusive solutions, complementing BeWorks' pioneering efforts in the cleantech space.

Innovate UK Grant Impact:

This project is made possible through 100% funding support of the Innovate UK Design Foundations: Net Zero Environments Grant of £68,200. Securing the Innovate UK grant funding has provided the potential to de-risk the product environment and enable BeWorks Automation to explore VUI-AI model concepts in EV charging as an early-stage R&D, strengthening their position when pitching to investors and stakeholders for future technology development stages. The funding is going to significantly accelerate and enhance the project's development towards later-stage R&D.

Shell StartUp Engine UK, a prestigious acceleration programme, plays a pivotal role in nurturing early to mid-stage energy startups, providing them with essential skills, connections, and industry insights. BeWorks Emerges as a Standout

In the 2023 programme, centered around Hydrogen, Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage, and Electric Vehicle charging, BeWorks Automation rose as a standout among twenty startups, out of thousands of startup applications. After a rigorous selection process, the Selection Committee, comprised of Shell leaders and experts, chose eight startups across all three focus areas, including BeWorks in the EV charging category.

Throughout the programme, BeWorks actively engaged with Shell mentors, benefiting from discussions on technical product development, regulations & compliance, and business development. The team collaborated closely with Shell UK Mobility team to conduct interactive focus group sessions within the Shell enABLE network, gaining insights into challenges related to existing EV charging infrastructure.

BeWorks implemented Proof-of-Value projects at Shell forecourts, interacting with existing Shell customers (EV drivers) and forecourt EV site staff workers (EV champions). BeWorks Validates Accessibility Features in Fulham EV Hub During Proof-of-Value (PoV) Project

London, UK, 13.10.2023 — Despite London's typical gloomy weather, BeWorks Automation embarked on an insightful visit to the innovative Shell EV hub in Fulham. This visit marked a pivotal phase in BeWorks' Proof-of-Value (PoV) project, dedicated to validating key aspects for the development of an advanced technical accessible EV chargepoint prototype.

The primary goal of the visit was to gain critical insights into the existing EV charging infrastructure. To achieve this, the BeWorks team engaged in insightful discussions with both EV drivers and the dedicated EV champions at the Fulham hub. These champions play an essential role in shaping the prototyping efforts of BeWorks.

The BeWorks team came well-prepared, armed with a customised survey aimed at uncovering the real-world challenges faced by individuals with diverse accessibility needs. Their mission was to understand the unique realities that shape interactions with EV charging infrastructure, with a specific focus on physical EV chargepoints.

The feedback received from returning EV drivers about the current EV chargepoints at the Fulham hub was exceptionally positive. These discussions delved into the current challenges faced by public EV charging stations in the UK. Key areas of concern include user experience, pricing, parking environments, and EV chargepoint hardware.

One of the highlights of the visit was a conversation with Clyde, the Fulham #EVchampion. In his role as chargepoint manager, Clyde's friendly and helpful nature, as well as his willingness to assist, has made him a favourite among EV drivers. Some drivers even mentioned that his approachability and positive energy were the primary reasons they continued to choose the Fulham hub. This underlines the importance of excellent customer service in the EV charging landscape.

In summary, the Fulham hub visit is part of BeWorks' extensive stakeholder engagement process. It involves in-person user interviews, marking the second phase of the initiative. BeWorks is excited about visiting more charging locations across the UK to gather insights from an even broader spectrum of users. These insights are invaluable in further shaping stakeholder requirements and enhancing the development of accessible EV charging solutions.

Formal approval of SEIS/EIS relief

BeWorks Automation is pleased to announce that it has received the HMRC Advance Assurance for SEIS/EIS Scheme(s).

The Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) are government initiatives offering some of the most attractive tax breaks available in the UK. For the investor, it’s a tax-efficient way to invest in small companies. As the relief available for Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) and Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) investments is a significant incentive for investors they will often require confirmation that the investment will qualify for relief before they will transfer any funds.

Such confirmation can be obtained from HMRC by making an application for advanced assurance. Advance Assurance (AA) is provisional confirmation from HMRC that the investment made into a company will be eligible for tax relief so long as all stipulations are met by both the company and investors.

Smart Charging - The new electrical vehicle charging evolution

Enterprises across every commercial and industrial sector are seeking to “decarbonise” their supply chains, with transport electrification taking a central role in their digital transformation initiatives. EV transportation is rapidly gaining traction globally.

More infrastructure is being delivered to facilitate EV charging now but, more importantly, this is being linked to wider green agenda aims via vehicle to grid chargers. These fit EV ownership nicely into the thread of ‘homes / buildings as power stations’ in their own regard and the very definition of decentralisation. All of these will play a role in the future. Government policy looks forward to 2035 but perhaps by then the deep seated and intractable desire of the British individual to own a car at all might be starting to fade, with car clubs and shared transportation becoming the norm.

Flexible charging does its work by allowing electric vehicles to be charged when energy prices are cheapest, for example when wind and solar power are generating lots of electricity or when there is less demand across the system. Flexible charging also helps to keep energy costs down for all consumers as technology allows stored electricity from electric vehicle batteries to be sent back onto the grid when it is needed.

According to the roads minister Jesse Norman, the increasing automation of cars is transforming the way people drive, and the government is steadily updating the laws in order to prepare for the future. This act will ensure that the UK’s infrastructure and insurance system is ready for the biggest transport revolution in a century.

Deemed most important by the networks and energy sector more generally is the regulation to ensure all charge points sold or installed are ‘smart’, meaning they can receive, process and react to information or signals, such as by adjusting the rate of charge or discharge; transmit, monitor and record information such as energy consumption data; comply with requirements around security; and be accessed remotely.

£90 million UK drive to reduce carbon emissions

In recent months there have been a number of high profile announcements from industry and UK government, illustrating the push towards a low carbon economy. The Government has a number of grant schemes available to help with cutting carbon emissions in industry and homes.

Recently, it has announced a £90 million package aimed to tackle emissions from homes and heavy industry – including funding for Europe’s first large scale, low carbon hydrogen plants which could generate enough clean energy to heat over 200,000 homes.

Smart microgrids can play a critical role in the UK's future energy system, providing flexibility and resilience, and therefore utilizing them across the country could reduce housing emissions by up to 80% and save consumers money on their energy bills. Microgrids are modern, small-scale versions of the centralised electricity system. They achieve specific local goals, such as reliability, carbon emission reduction, diversification of energy sources, and cost reduction, established by the local community being served.

Renewable energy sources can be integrated in a smart microgrid and this, in turn, enables the energy production to be accurately predicted. The government says that over 250,000 people could have their homes powered by local renewable sources by 2030, which could reduce energy bills by 50%.

Along with the support for local energy projects, heavy industry will receive a further £18.5 million of funding for projects developing and trialing technologies to move industrial concrete and glass production away from fossil fuels and onto renewables.

The increased need to reduce manufacturing costs and the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technologies are fuelling the growth of the market in the UK. The seamless integration of hardware and software increases the need for process efficiency. IoT based automation shall be instrumental in accelerating the growth of the market in the country and worldwide during 2019-2026. Deployment of automation solutions will aid businesses to optimise costs and lower downtime and process failures. The fourth revolution of the industry is expected to act as a competitive element in the UK from 2019 onwards.

According to a survey, Among G10 nations, Britain, however, currently has the lowest density of robots in manufacturing. The UK lags way behind many European countries in terms of robot automation, according to the latest statistics from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

Mike Wilson, chairman of the British Automation and Robot Association (BARA) mentioned that over many years, the UK has been attracting workers from other countries, with businesses putting more weight on hiring people rather than investing in automation equipment. A survey of 1,000 employees in the UK, made on behalf of Messe München and Automatica, identified that that 65% want education and training for implementing more automated principles and systems promoted as a top priority by policy makers. 68% predict that the use of robots is essential for the competitiveness of the UK's economy. The automotive sector leads the way when it comes to the use of robots and automation in both the UK and Europe as a whole, according to statistics from the IFR.

Wilson said during the press conference that if Jaguar Land Rover hadn’t invested in robots for its UK production plants then it would have made those cars elsewhere. It could be a great opportunity for other sectors in the UK to take away a lesson from how automobile firms have embraced automation in manufacturing. There might be UK manufacturing's lack of investment in automation by UK manufacturing but it seems to be promising according to new government strategies illustrating the push towards Industry 4.0 adoption and low carbon economy.

The UK now has an opportunity to invest in robotics, Wilson said, because ‘there are solutions out there from other countries’ that have installed automation systems. He said the UK government has been listening to some extent – it has produced an industrial strategy and commissioned the Made Smarter Review, a report led by Professor Juergen Maier, CEO of Siemens UK, looking at the benefits of digital technology. The UK government has also increased the Annual Investment Allowance to £1m, for firms to offset investments against tax. Wilson said this fund hasn’t been used as much as it should be by manufacturers.

The correlation between the adoption of automation withing the manufacturing sector and effect on employment should not be misunderstood. As the report from House of Commons says, the risk we face is not a robot takeover of our workplaces, but that our lack of adoption and the reluctance of businesses to lead the way in the Fourth Industrial Revolution means other countries will seize the initiative and take the advantage of new technologies, not least the growth and jobs they bring, while we are left behind. Therefore, advocating the positive changes of digital transformation is now becoming one of the crucial initiatives in various UK sectors.
